Follow your interests ✅
There are geopolitical roles in everything from tech to public affairs, economics to history, there are many and varied roles — take it from someone who built a professional image divorced from my personal goals and interests, save yourself the time and double-down on what interests you. You do not have to be a Diplomat to influence your geopolitical landscape.
Experience ✅
Get as much relevant extra-curricular experience as possible. Not only is it a good signal and talking point to future employers, but you will meet and make impressions on people who are active in the world you are looking to join. During a short, three week programme I was involved in during University, I made a contact which (eventually) opened the door to my work experience in Singapore — looking back, there have been many instances like this where actively positioning yourself within the community you want to join pays dividends in powerful and unpredictable ways.
Higher Education ✅
Many of the recruitment platforms will automatically disqualify candidates that do not have education qualifications higher than a bachelors. If you are itching to get into the workforce, I would recommend a post graduate certificate, which is less of a time and financial commitment than an Honours/Masters programme, but signals a post graduate qualification.
Languages ✅
In the spirit of the first takeaway, do not force yourself to learn a language, as it is a long, commitment-heavy process. However, many roles either require secondary language skills, or favour language skills in automated recruitment processes.
Depending on who/where you are… visas ✅
Many of the geopolitical hubs are based in population dense centers. In the English speaking world, this means that individuals, who are not based in the United States or United Kingdom, will likely need working rights BEFORE applying for roles.
